The Devil’s Alphabet, 2020
Solution on black velvet
36 x 36 inches
A hybrid of a crossword puzzle and scrabble game, that when figured out, form a popular saying and its associated acronym. The words are comprised of 26 letters, with number values that add up to 26 as well, hence “The Devil’s Alphabet”. This artwork references a time in our history where a great deal of fear is being generated via the widespread dissemination of misinformation, making it difficult for the general population to discern fact from fiction.

ARTIST STATEMENT
CHARITY ALGARME
My artwork is concerned with the exploration of materiality, through the lens of
phenomenology. As a result, the materials I use can be highly varied, and are chosen for their ability to strike parallels between the material world and the psychological realm. Issues concerning the perception of culture and time feature prominently in the work. Because the human body acts as a physical marker of time, the artwork consistently references the body itself, or the spaces it occupies. As a native Californian, I am particularly interested in my own “backyard”, but also the context within which it sits in the global scene. As we continue the thread of one surreal year into another, I currently find myself making artwork that seeks to record the unique voids and circumstances created by these extraordinary times.
